We all have new best friends. Their names aren’t Jack, Sally, Tom, or Jessica. We call them Sora, CoPilot, Anthropic, Gemini… Unlike most of our human relationships, they don’t serve a social purpose. Our connection with them is rather "functional." These AI friends enable us to present ourselves as experts with minimal genuine knowledge. Need a post about something you have no clue about, mimiking expert jargon? Want to explain quantum physics like a pro? All you need is some practice in creating prompts, or you can have an AI Chatbot do even that for you. Like the magicians we watch in a circus, the bot‘s job is an instant illusion.
Underhyped, but not Underappreciated
The first public release of ChatGPT, based on the GPT-3.5 architecture, occurred on November 30, 2022. It initiated what is arguably the fastest and most transformative process the IT industry has ever unleashed. Its impact on society, work, politics, economy, science, and many other aspects of our lives is immense. It’s as if the next phase of human evolution is unfolding before us in fast motion. With the advent of AGI, Artificial General Intelligence, expected for this decade, the average human will be outcompeted at all cognitive capabilities. Believe it or not: AI is significantly underhyped, given its profound consequences. What the general public perceives as merely a very valuable tool is, in reality, a paradigm shift for life itself.

The AI Honeytrap
We’ve all gravitated to AI with astonishing speed, and I’m no exception. So what makes these chatbots so appealing? The most immediate answer is their ability to simplify both our professional and personal lives. Yet, the appeal runs deeper than mere convenience; it’s intricately woven into the fabric of modern life itself. AI doesn’t just seamlessly integrate with our way of living; it’s also a powerful, concurrent force actively shaping its evolution. This is a self-optimizing symbiosis in real time. The reasons are rooted in the modern way of life:
- Instant Gratification: We crave quick answers and immediate solutions, often preferring not to dwell on deep thought.
- Social Validation: There’s a persistent social pressure to appear knowledgeable and intelligent.
- Utilitarian Learning: Learning has largely transformed into a means to an end, rather than holding intrinsic value.
- Information Overload: Living under a constant barrage of information, our minds yearn for curation and cognitive relief.
- Hyper-Personalization: We inhabit a world that promises us ever more individuality and consequently hyper-personalization, from travel experiences to software preferences.
This list of reasons fostering AI adoption is by no means complete.
AI and Authenticity: The Educational Imperative
There is a poignant German proverb: ‚Wer nicht mit der Zeit geht, der geht mit der Zeit.‘ This translates (a bit clunky) to, ‚Those who don’t move with the times will be left behind by time,‘ signifying that individuals failing to adapt will eventually become obsolete. Its profound brevity makes it difficult to translate elegantly without losing it‘s sophisticated wordplay – sorry!
Hence, we must confront the blurred lines between genuine knowledge and AI-assisted performance—this illusion of the instant expert without losing AI’s enormous benefits. The world has no need for further superficiality. The alternative is not to shun this technology, but rather to embrace and leverage it for the greatest possible benefit. The dinner party expert can easily be unmasked simply by asking the right questions. Similarly, a business presenter whose content is overtly solely AI-generated will quickly falter under scrutiny.
The answer to this development is clear: education. As we observe in so many aspects of daily life, education empowers individuals to critically assess what they encounter. As AI goes mainstream, so too must the awareness of its pitfalls. By educating ourselves and future generations on the nuances of AI, we can de-risk it and harness its potential. It does have to start in our kids classrooms. How many more thought-provoking ideas does an AI chatbot’s answer generate if I’m able to engage with it using my genuine knowledge and critical thinking?
